Meet the Candidates



SENATOR CANDIDATE

ADAM FALK

Adam is a Sophomore Math Major from Rochester. He is currently a community advocate and coordinator for Weekend at Burghy’s. He is running for a senator position because he “Wants to make positive changes to out college and also enjoys being involved on campus.” Adam describes himself as hard-working, reliable, and as possessing great leadership skills. If elected, he would like to address increasing class availability and trying to make any campus parking lot open to all students with parking passes.

 

SENATOR CANDIDATE

ANDREW DESMARAIS

Andrew is a junior Political Science/History major from Barre, Vermont. He is the founder of College Democrats and is involved with campus radio station WQKE. Andrew says he would like to  be elected “To change some things around campus, and I want to get involved at SUNY Plattsburgh.” He describes himself as “already active in the community” and says he “has many ideas that can be acted upon.” If elected, Andrew feels the most important issues facing SUNY Plattsburgh are new green initiatives, saying no to tax hikes on students, and new huts for smokers in a effort to enforce the 25 foot rule.

 

SENATOR CANDIDATE

BRANDON BENNETT

Brandon is a junior Sociology major from Ithaca, NY.  Brandon is currently involved as a community advocate, Vice-President and member of NO MORE!, and a member of the Sociology honor society. Brandon says he wants to run for senator, “To be the voice of the student body, and to represent it as well as possible.” Brandon believes qualities he possesses that would benefit this position are his experience as a leader through being a Community Advocate and also his knowledge of the Plattsburgh community through this position. If elected, issues that Brandon finds important to address are the budget crisis, funding for clubs, and other financial issues

 

SENATOR CANDIDATE

CADACIA TOWNSEND

Cadacia is a Childhood Education Major with a Spanish Concentration from Queens, NY. She is the current secretary of AKEBA, Community Chair for Raices, and soon to be inducted into Chi Alpha Epsilon. Cadacia says she is running for the senator position because “It will allow me the opportunity to exercise my leadership skills and give me experience outside cultural clubs, I want to educate those whoa re unsure about the purpose of the student association, which is to be the voice of the student body.” Cadacia describes herself as having positive energy and lots of ideas, and if elected she would like to address the lack on dining options and how healthy they are, which she believes is a major issue.

 

SENATOR CANDIDATE

CHARLES SANCHEZ

Charles is a freshman Computer Science major from the Bronx. He would like to be elected to the Student Association, “To be able to have a voice in the decision making processes that go on at this campus and to have a voice in student government.” Charles says, “I am willing to dedicate myself to working for the students of this campus as well as help them in any way I can. I take this very seriously and will be very outspoken to problems I am faced with. The most important issues Charles would like to focus on are tuition hikes and budget cuts.

 

PRESIDENT CANDIDATE

CHARLIE PEPPERS

Charles is a Junior Journalism Major from Brooklyn. He has been involved as an RA, a TA, Secretary of C.T.A, a member of R.S.A, editor for cardinal points, and the vice president of hall council. Charles wants to be president to “Give a voice to the Plattsburgh State Campus.” He’s like to create an “open mic night” in one of the ballrooms for students/faculty to discuss issues and to create more green initiatives with the help of community members. He’d also like to make clubs and organizations a cohesive unit. Charles describes himself as “A hard-worker who stands loyal to his cause, which is to prove more outlets for student involvement and passion on campus.” He also describes himself as sincere, honest, and ambitious. If elected, he would like to address budget cuts and raising tuition and how the Gen-Ed program is being modified to compliment these cuts. Charles poses the question, “Why should the quality of our education be a byproduct of bureaucracy?”

 

VP FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS CANDIDATE

FIONA FOGARTY

Fiona is Junior English/Adolescence Education major from New Paltz, NY. She is currently involved as a member of the Plattsburgh State Service Corp, is an RA, a member of ODK and Sigma Delta Tau English honor societies, and last year was chair of the Student Association’s Activities Coordination Board Entertainment Committee. Fiona says she would like to run for VP of Student Affairs because, “I know how much the SA provides for SUNY Plattsburgh students, and I have been involved in providing fun activities and a sense of community to the student body through chairing Entertainment Committee for a year. Now, I am ready to take that leadership experience and apply it to the position of the VP of Student Affairs because I care about what students need, and I care about teaching every student about what the Student Association can provide for them.”If elected, the most important issues Fiona would like to address are educating students further on the opportunities available to them through the SA’s many clubs and organizations.

JACOB PREMO

Jake is a senior BFA Art Studio major from Massena, NY. He is current a member of Phi Kappa Phi honor society, served as events chair for the Young Democrats in the spring 09, and is a member of Alpha Sigma Phi. He desires the position of VP for the Arts because, “For me becoming a part of the Student Association is a chance to become deeply involved in the Arts, an area that makes up a large portion of my life. I believe that though I am very professional, I am also very good with people. I am responsible and dedicated and my experience working for the Art department and museum over the past three years has given me knowledge crucial for this position.” During his term, Jake would like to see an increase in student involvement with all of the fields of art on campus and would like to help promote events so that the student body can be more aware of the opportunities that are available to them though the Arts.”

 

SENATOR CANDIDATE

JAMES McKENNA

Jimmy is a senior HRT major from Highland, NY. He is currently involved on the ACB Entertainment Committee and is the Entertainment Committee Chair for Fall 2009. He is a member of ODK and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies. He would like to be elected “First and foremost, to work on increasing attendance at events and raising awareness for of what the Student Association does.” He describes himself as excited and interested in the Student Association and has had experience putting on events such as coordinating Plattsburgh Best Dance Crew. If elected, Jimmy feels the most important issues facing SUNY Plattsburgh are budget cuts.

JASMIN ATHAS

JASMINE HAWKINS

Jasmine is a junior Mathematics major from Rockland County. She is currently involved as an RA, a member of ODK and the Clubs and Organizations board, an Orientation Leader, Student Ambassador, and a Math tutor for Student Support Services. Jasmine would like to be elected VP of Organizations because, “I would be a great attribute to the SA team. I am very involved so I am aware of a lot on campus, and I am full of many ideas that will help benefit and expand the SA.” Jasmine describes herself as a great people person that loves interacting with others, and if elected she would like to focus on encouraging more of the student body to become involved in clubs and organizations

JEANNIE VALENCIA

Jeannie is a junior Political Science major from Queens, NY. She is currently a member of Chi Alpha Epsilon, has been a part of the EOP Summer Program, was a Tutor/Counselor this past summer, and is the treasurer for the History Association and AKEBA. Jeannie would like to be elected VP of Organizations to “Be a representative of the student body and to become aware of the issues facing students to address them and find a solution.” She describes herself as, “Passionate, outgoing, and a hard-worked”, and believes that her involvement in many clubs and organizations she has shown her commitment by being a responsible officer, organizing events and promoting the club’s mission. If elected, she would like to address budget cuts affecting clubs, organizations, and academic departments.

 

VP FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS CANDIDATE

JOEL COLLADO

Joel is sophomore public relations major from New York City. He is currently involved as an Administrative Assistant, is an RA, does public relations for El Pueblo, has played intramural basketball and was a matriculation speaker in 2009. He wants to be elected to the student association because “The SA has helped me and other students voice our opinions and concerns, The position I am running for helps me help other students. Overall I just want to help others.” He describes himself as a leader, open-minded, and diverse. He is very interested in the campus and community being diversified. If elected, Joel would address issues including the budget cut we are facing but also minority and women’s concerns such as “hate” and other aspects that devalue diversity.

 

SENATOR CANDIDATE

JUSTIN SCHNEIDER

Justin is a sophomore Accounting/Business major from Poughkeepsie. He is currently involved in Hall Council, Volunteers at CVPH, Relay for Life, and is a former track and field runner. He wants to be elected senator because “The Student Association makes a huge impact on campus. I know I can be a leader to better this campus and make a difference.” Justin describes himself as involved and reliable and if elected, would like “To branch out the SA to more new clubs and organization and get their clubs name out there to give the club the best opportunity it has. The SA does a lot, but without other clubs, the SA wouldn’t be what it is.”

 

VP FOR ORGANIZATIONS CANDIDATE

KYLA BERRY

Kyla is a Junior Art Major with a Minor in Art Therapy from Lynbrook, NY. She is a member and current secretary of OAB and has held titles of both secretary and vice president of Hillel. She would like to be elected because she has “Seen the process behind the position through involvement with OAB and because it’s a great way to be involved on campus while also being able to help students.” She describes herself as “Reliable, dedicated, hard-working, and possessing lots of leadership experience. If elected, Kyla would like to address concerns of organizations and would “Work to ensure that every club is getting the information and opportunity that’s necessary to be successful.”

 

SENATOR CANDIDATE

LA KEISHA GRENADE

La Keisha is a junior Sociology/Criminal Justice major from NYC. She is currently involved as the President of Kent Hall Council, Treasurer and Head of Public Relations for O.W.E, Treasurer for the Sociology and Criminal Justice Club, a Mentor at Oak Street Elementary school, and through community service. La Keisha would like to be elected as senator because she “Believes that I can make a difference. I am very hard-working and determined. I will make it my duty to satisfy the needs of the students and settle for nothing less than what is best for the student body.” If elected, the issues La Keisha feels are most important to address are getting students involved in campus-wide events, getting them to attend SA meetings, and allowing them to have their voices heard

 

VP FOR ACADEMICS CANDIDATE

MEGHAN TRIM

Meghan is a Junior Political Science major from Saranac Lake, NY. She is currently involved as a previous SA senator through Spring 2009, Co-coordinator of Take Back the night spring 08 and 09, Ex-Officio for ACB Spring 09, Member of the Underground Expressions poetry group, and President of the Center for Women’s Concerns Spring 08 to 09. Meghan wants to be elected VP for Academics “To be that leader that makes sure the students of SUNY Plattsburgh have the materials and resources they need to do the best they can every day.” Meghan describes herself as organized, having a positive attitude, a passionate drive, and good mediating skills. If elected, the most important issues Meghan would like to address are decreasing book costs, continuing library hours, and creating more opportunities for networking for getting jobs after graduation.

 

SENATOR CANDIDATE

MICHAEL BRENNAN

Mike is a freshman psychology major from Queensbury, NY. He is currently involved as the President of Whiteface Hall and of the Residence Hall Association. He was recently elected as a freshman representative to the honors council. Mike wants to be elected senator “To help with events and to get more people involved with activities. I love what the SA does for our campus and am very excited to be a part of it and to see our student government in action.” Mike describes himself as a good leader, motivated, and as loving to help others. If elected, the issues Mike would address are “How residence halls are cared for by students and student opinion of things such as parking, food, and ideas for events.”

MICHAL NAUMOWICZ

Michal is a senior Political Science major originally from Poland, currently living in Queens, NY. Michal is a member of Plattsburgh State Democrats, is a Representative of Kent Hall, has performed community service at the Adirondack Animal Shelter, has twice been a Multicultural Sponsor at Kehoe, and twice participated in Relay for Life. Michal says he would like to be elected to Student Association “Since I have had an interest in politics since high school and have worked in a diverse set of campaigns.” He believes the fact that he has served one-term as President of his neighborhood town hall would also help and remarks that he is very blunt and a straight talker, “I get right to the point”. If elected, Michal would like to bring back Fall graduation, attack tuition hikes, enfore the 25 foot rule by supporting sheltering smokers in a “Smoking Hut”.

 

PRESIDENT CANDIDATE

MIKE WHITE

Mike is a Junior Political Science major from Massena, NY. He is currently involved as a Student Association senator, Chair for the Campus-City Coalition, Program Coordinator for the Multicultural Alliance, an RA, a member of the ODK honor society, a student ambassador, and a former member of Plattsburgh States Baseball team. Mike would like to be elected president because he says “I am very passionate about SUNY Plattsburgh. I also see a tremendous potential within the entire student body and City of Plattsburgh. I would like to harness that potential by serving students via the SA.” Mike describes himself as experienced having served a term as senator currently and as possessing a passion for helping people. He wants to “continue to be a positive asset to the SA.” If elected, the most important issues facing Plattsburgh that Mike would like to address are “Continuous SUNY budget cuts and educating the students on theses, making the city of Plattsburgh become everyone’s home, and opening the downtown area of Plattsburgh to clubs and organizations.”

 

SENATOR CANDIDATE

NATE HILL

Nate is a freshman HRT major from Chestertown, NY. In his junior year of high school he served as class president, and was a high school Executive Committee member. Nate says he is running for student association because, “I would like to gave the opportunity to represent the student body, and to be the vital connection between them, the school, and the Plattsburgh community.”  Nate describes himself as having strong leadership skills from past experience, a strong will to please, and great work ethic. If elected, Nate feels that ANGEL is being used by very few teachers and should be implemented to its fullest extent and would address this issue in an effort to increase efficiency, cut down on paper usage, and help our students learn.

NORA AUGUSTINE

Nora is a freshman psychology major from Tanzania. She is currently a member of Club International and would like to run for Student Association senator to further develop her leadership skills and to get involved. Nora describes herself as a good leader, and was a mentor to 45 students in her previous school for three years. If elected, Nora would like to “Show the presence of the Student Association to other students, especially international students since most of them are often not aware of events that are being offered by the Student Association on campus.

 

VP FOR FINANCE CANDIDATE

 PJ SHAH

PJ is a junior Economic & Finance major with a minor in Management Information from Nepal. He is an RA, currently the president of Club International, and also a member of ODK. PJ describes himself as “Hard working, having good leadership and problem-solving skills, and as a friendly yet disciplined person.” As President of Club International he, “Was able to relate with many diversified people and has enjoyed it.” He is interested in addressing the current re—imbursement problem and would like to make and effective system where students can directly deal with local vendors electronically.

 PRISCILA ORTIZ

Priscila is a sophomore Magazine Journalism major from Manhattan. She is currently an RA, is the Public Relations Official for El Pueblo, and is a member of both TAWS and No More. Priscila wants to be elected to Student Association to be “A voice for the student population and to bring much-needed positive change to SUNY Plattsburgh.” She believes that her current involvement through clubs etc. will help her form a direct link with many students. Some issues that Priscila would like to address, if elected, include tuition increases, lack of funding for clubs and organizations, and more up-to-date technology for classrooms.

ROBERT NOONAN

Robert is a sophomore psychology major from Holland Patent, NY. He is currently involved on the Plattsburgh State Track team and as a member of the Hood Hall Council. Robert would like to be elected senator “To act as a bridge between the Student Association, the student body, and the Plattsburgh community.” He would also like to represent the views and positions of the student body. Robert describes himself as dedicated and committed to what he invests himself in, and as open to new ideas suggestions and proposals. If elected, Robert believes the most important issues to address are “The SA budgeting, the need for students to come together and communicate in order to work as one body and to improve SUNY Plattsburgh.”

SAGORIKA SEN

Sagorika is a junior Economics/Marketing major from India. She is currently involved as the President of the Mason Hall Council, President of the Honors Student Association, and anchor on Open Eye for PSTV, a DJ on campus radio WQKE, and a member of French Club and the Student Affairs Board.  Sagorika would like to be elected to the student association because, “SA is the best way to get your voice heard on campus. Being an international student for two years, I have truly enjoyed my time in Plattsburgh and this seems like an awesome way to give back to this community/campus at large.” She describes herself as confident, compassionate, goal oriented, and possessing a team spirit. If elected, she would like to address combating ignorance/discrimination/ or inequality on this campus and to help spread campus awareness of global problems.

 

SENATOR CANDIDATE

SAMUEL DORSEY

Samuel is a Junior Cytotechnology major from Clifton Park,  NY. He is currently involved as the student association senator spring 2009-current and is also the Chairman of the Legislative Review Board. Samuel would like to run for re-election as a senator to continue his public service to the students. As a senator, Samuel says he has “Streamlined the legislative process, and simplified SA policy, and there is still more to be done.” He describes himself as “Skilled in simplifying legislative processes and as possessing a unique historical awareness of the SA’s previous governments which allow him to see both past, present, and future for the SA.” If elected, the most important issues facing SUNY Plattsburgh Samuel would like to address are the Gen Ed Requirement changes, rising textbook prices, and the SUNY budget crisis and Plattsburgh’s debt.

 

SENATOR CANDIDATE

SASHA DOW-KITSON

Sasha is a junior biology major from Trinidad. She is currently involved as a Fall 2009 Orientation Leader, Public Relations and member of the PSU Gospel Choir, a CVPH volunteer, Math tutor at the Learning Center, H.S.A co-president, and a member of both the Biology Club and Club Caribbean. Sasha would like to be elected senator for “The power to influence the quality of experience at Plattsburgh State. As a senator, I would appropriately represent the interest of the student body.” She describes herself as possessing great managerial experience, extensive club involvement, and as having fresh ideas and perspectives that would aid in SA’s goals. If elected, the most important issues Sasha would like to address are “The proposed restructuring of the SA fee that could result in the removal of valuable SA services.”

TIEN LE MINH

Tien is a Finance and Mathematics major from Vietnam. He is currently involved as a member of the Executive Board to the Stock Market Club, a member of Chi Phi, a subject coordinator for the learning center Aug. 08- May 09., and a newspaper writer Feb 09 to May 09. Tien would like to be elected senator because he believes that “The student Association should be built upon a good relationship between students and senators. If elected, I will reach out to the Plattsburgh community in order to know students needs and desires, and act upon them.” Tien describes himself as having good leadership and communication skills, a likable person, and friendly and understanding toward the student community. If elected, the most important issues Tien would like to address are the tuition hike, especially the large increase for international students

VP FOR ACADEMICS CANDIDATE

 TOBILOBA ONI

Tobi is a junior biology major from Nigeria. He is currently involved as the President of the Biology Club, is a student ambassador, an RA, was an RM in the 08-09 school year, is a member of Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society and is currently a student association senator. Tobi would like to be elected VP for Academics because during his current term as a senator he has been “Engulfed in the concerns of students, and is looking forward to further representing the students.” Tobi also is “Concerned about the recent budget crisis, and a primary effort as VP Academics will be to ensure that the money students are paying is going towards their quality of student life, and not the state government.” Lastly, an important issue Tobi would like to focus on, if elected, is his concern about possible changes to the Gen Ed Requirements. “I want to play a huge role in ensuring that students’ opinions are voiced concerning any changes.”

 

SENATOR CANDIDATE

TU NGUYEN

Tu is a junior finance major from Vietnam. She is currently involved as the secretary of Club International, Secretary of the Student Advisory Council at SBE, and a member of both ODK and Phi Eta Sigma honor societies. Tu would like to run for SA senator “TO raise awareness about the importance of the Student Association to the community and to all of the SUNY Plattsburgh campus.” She describes herself as possessing good communication skills, responsible, a quick responder to any circumstances, fast at finishing tasks, and fluent in both English and Vietnamese. If elected, some issues that Tu would like to address are “Publicizing and putting more monetary support behind SA clubs and organizations, persuading students that the SA fee is spent and allocated effectively, and making sure that important academic things, such as Z-Platt which almost lost funding, do not lose funds.”

 

SENATOR CANDIDATE

ZACHARY BRADT

Zachary is a Junior Individualized Studies major from Little Rock, Arkansas. He is a current member of Phi Eta Sigma and ODK, philanthropic chair of Alpha Sigma Phi, and has held vice-president position in the Plattsburgh State Young Democrats. If elected, Zachary would like to work toward improving community relations with our college and “To improve and induce a sense of public service.” He describes himself as a leader and a strong advocate for the voice of the students

 

SENATOR CANDIDATE

ZACHARY JOHNSON

Zack is a freshman Criminal Justice major from Manlius. He is currently involved through community service at an animal shelter. Zack would like to be elected senator “To be the voice of the student body.” Also he wants to, “…Mix and mingle with the other senators and students in positions of power to ensure that the students of Plattsburgh are getting a fair hand from those they elect.” A quality Zack believes he possesses is a good work ethic. If elected, Zack would like to address “The budget crisis, funding for clubs, and other financial issues. Additionally, he will try to address whatever important issues come up during his term.”
