Another integral part of my work is the medium. I do not know where my canvas was woven or from which field the cotton was harvested that made the canvas. I am also unaware of the location where the trees, needed to produce the paper that facilitate my drawings, were logged. What I do know is that all the energy spent to assist in the production of my artwork is something that drives me to create art that is meaningful and worthy of sacrifice. After these conditions are carefully thought about, the work becomes a celebration of the medium. My primary concern is to enjoy the process of creating while remaining cognizant of the privilege that I have been afforded. I have questioned whether or not my art is an important thing to be doing. There are other actions that would be more helpful to our society. But, our society is defined by our cultural accomplishments. In short, our art defines us. It is in exploring this definition that I am concerned. Our entire lives are spent creating waste. It is a reality that we are very good at expending resources. My art is about sacrifice, process, and creating, but it is also about defining myself and what is important.
