The Senior Art Exhibition is a highlight of the academic year and a
culminating event for the students in the show. In its broadest sense, it is the
culmination of their undergraduate studies, reflecting both the skills of their
training as young artists, and the knowledge and insights derived from a
comprehensive liberal arts education at the college.
More specifically, the exhibition is the result of a year of intense
preparation. During the fall semester, students receive training in museum
studies and gallery display, and they submit portfolios of their work for
faculty review. In the spring the exhibition itself is planned, organized, and
presented by the students, including the production of a splendid catalogue.
Throughout this yearlong process the students interact and collaborate with
each other, the faculty, and the Museum Director and staff.
The result of this process is an exhibition that is diverse in media,
technique, style, and content, but consistent in its high level of quality. This
year’s exhibition represents all areas of artistic concentration offered by the
Art Department: painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking,
photography, and graphic design. It also includes students from both the
B.A. and B.F.A. studio art degree programs, and students from the B.A. art
history program have contributed to the show’s planning and catalogue. It
is a comprehensive exhibition resulting from a collaborative process, but its
impressive quality is largely the result of many individual accomplishments.
The long hours in the studio involving hard work, skill, and dedication, are
clearly on display here. These students are to be congratulated for their
individual achievements as artists, as well as for the impressive collective
achievement of the exhibition itself.
The art faculty is pleased to sponsor the students in this year’s Senior
Exhibition. We thank the Museum Director and staff for their many
contributions to this fine show, and we welcome the college community and
all other visitors to enjoy the rich aesthetic experience that the students are
offering us.

While exploring the possibilities of their own sensitivity and opening
various aspects of their persona, the Seniors in this exhibition demonstrate
the variety of mediums and styles which are taught at Plattsburgh State.
Importantly, they exhibit the degree of accomplishment and individualism
which students can attain at the University.
The exhibition process is part of the learning experience. With instruction
from the Faculty, Director, and Museum Staff, they learn to present their
work properly and most effectively. They produce their own invitation and
catalogue, assist in the conceptualization presentation and installation of the
exhibit in the gallery, and speak about their work at the opening of the show
while hosting a reception for their guests.
Many art majors continue on to graduate studies and careers in
professional art fields. The exhibition displays the foundation of those
developments while also showing art used as a tool for the psychological
and emotional growth, and maturation of individuals. Hopefully, the
students’ educational experience becomes a physical and spiritual context in
which they can learn to lead creative and rewarding lives on a healthy planet.
Each year, the Senior Exhibition becomes an important punctuation in
our students’ careers. It usually focuses and concentrates their efforts into a
clear and generous body of work, the aspirations of which have been
developing over the years. The Plattsburgh State Art Museum takes great
pride in being an integral part of our students’ creative growth and helping
support the accomplishments achieved during their study with the Art
Department.
It is a unique venture, which continues to be a learning experience for all.
