One of the attendant pleasures in studying and participating in the contemporary art scene is the exercise
of watching the various relocations of the muse of painting and sculpture and deciphering her various disguises.
Creativity and patronage are critical ingredients for one of her visitations, but permanent residence combines even more
subtle ingredients. The Muse of Painting had lived for more than a century on the left bank, initially at
Napoleon's invitation, when, partially due to war but, as always, due to money and talent, she moved to New York City
and the Hamptons where she has remained for over sixty years. In this exhibition, we are looking at some of her first friends and associates in the New World. Seveth Avenue is replacing boulevarde Sainte Germaine, the Cedar-Deux Magots, and Johnny Walker-absinthe. This collection is not a selection of works organized and proportioned by history; rather, they are the tracings of a period of great creative ferment--a time of artists moving on to new expressions and the adventurous see-ers following them. This exhibit is comprised of works on loan from the collections of Al Lazar, Janet Groth, Paul Lazar and
Annie-B Parson, and Dee Knapp. The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Plattsburgh State Student Association through the Campus Arts Council. It was coordinated by David Driver, Museum Preparator, and Janet Groth, Professor of English at Plattsburgh State. The exhibit will continue in the Burke Gallery, Plattsburgh Art Museum, State University of New York through January 10, 1999. |
