Chris Kent is the son of Rockwell III ("Rocky") - eldest child, first son of Rockwell and Kathleen Whiting Kent - and Margaret Wolfe Kent. He is one of seven siblings, born of Rocky's second marriage; he also has two half-sisters. |
Chris began to seriously study painting as a graduate student in landscape architecture at the University of California-Berkeley. Like his grandfather and several of his cousins, he has traveled the world gathering inspiration for his compositions. One of the benefits of painting on location, Chris says, "is the library of real world images that are deposited in onešs mind." In an environmentalist, almost reverential way, Chris' depictions of New England, Alaska, California, Mexico, and most recently China, express his love for the natural world, a notion that he believes he shares with his grandfather.
Chris was recently married; he and his new wife, Lori, reside in California.

Chris, Ellen and Tim draw upon similar compositional elements to construct their works, Mount Diablo from Benicia, Monday Morning, and Winter North respectively. Like their grandfather they reduce natural detail to model forms and manipulate that form to convey depth.
This depth suggests topographical distance, as in Kent's painting, Late May: North Greenland, and spiritual depth as in Kent's painting, America. Ellen's Monday Morning also recalls the solid curves in Tim's, Waterfront, which is included in this exhibition.
