38. Lobi sad bateba, Burkina Faso, wood, 24" (61 cm) Bateba means wooden person or wooden people in Lobi. Lobi sculpture has generally been divided into three main categories, dangerous bateba (see note for #39), ordinary bateba and sad bateba, though in fact Lobi sculptural iconography is far more complex than this. The statues invoke the power of the Thila (singular Thil), the pantheon of Lobi spirit dieties. In the case of this figure, with its particular posture of grief, it was probably employed as a sad bateba, a figure used to help someone through the process of grieving.
