36. Yoruba female equestrian, Nigeria, wood and pigments, 10 7/8" (27.5 cm) Female equestrian figures are rare among the Yoruba. This piece seems to have been carved as a freestanding sculpture rather than as a part of a more elaborate carving- a lage mask or grouping of some sort. Evidently she was made to honor a woman of great importance and dignity. Note (as in #34) the large scale of the head, and the proud and regal bearing in her posture. The high, prominent breasts are also symbolic both of feminine beauty and the capacity of women to nurture and sustain society. Anonymous Collection Back to Region Top of Page |
