36. Yoruba female equestrian, Nigeria, wood and pigments, 10 7/8" (27.5 cm) Female equestrian figures are rare among the Yoruba. This piece seems to have been carved as a freestanding sculpture rather than as a part of a more elaborate carving- a lage mask or grouping of some sort. Evidently she was made to honor a woman of great importance and dignity. Note (as in #34) the large scale of the head, and the proud and regal bearing in her posture.
