27. Senufo Kpeliye’e mask, Cote d’Ivoire, wood, 10 1/2" (27 cm) Used in association with the Poro society among the Senufo (see note to #31), one of the interesting sculptural attributes of this type of mask is the abstracted forms carved on the side of the face, which represent ears. The raised marks on the forehead are a symbol called “serege”, or cluster of palm nuts. Palm oil nuts represent abundance and plentiful well-being to many peoples throughout the region, hence their significance on this mask.
