Fanti doll, Akuaba, Ghana, wood, hair, glass beads and shell, 11 1/2" (29 cm)   Believed to hold the power to make barren women conceive, among other things, these dolls are carried around by Fanti women and treated as real children. They are also used in the education of young girls regarding the responsibilities of child-rearing and mature womanhood. The doll’s features represent idealised beauty and serenity.
